It seemed like every time she turned around..
he was there. Lurking in the corner of her vision as she cooked, although as soon as she glanced his way, only shadows lurked under her dinette set. Behind the tv, yet as soon as she cocked her head to the side, it'd be dirt along the wall, or a cord bunched into a contortion of a sadly mimed him. She acted like it didn't matter, that she could continue her semi-boring life in that hell hole, but her eyes would drift away from whatever dribble was on her tv set. It wasn't that she couldn't get sucked in to the characters' lives, what with their never ending melodramas and almost comedic strikes of tragedy, but.. his eyes were there, boring into her. She could feel it.
She lashed her head around, but he was already gone.
"macabre", a voice piqued with mild amusement at her naivete. She shuddered, the hair on the nape of her neck standing on end as her muscles tensed. Her voice quivered, but she forced it to hold a strength she knew she didn't have in her.
"Leave me alone, Goddamnit," She growled, clutching her remote in a death grip. She felt laughter build in the air around her, as the atmosphere became thick enough to almost choke her.
"macabre," the little girls sang; they rang their bells to school.
"cadaver," the little boys cried; they spied their chance for cruel.
"macabre!" the little girls shout as one by one, they fall
"cadaver!" the little boys taunt when they begin to crawl.
She watched before her eyes as the shadows plagued this memory- no, dream- no.. nightmare, surrounding the children as they did the unthinkable. She closed her eyes quickly, shutting them hard against the picture, only to feel them pop open, to watch blood flow down into the dirt road, painting the kids a sickly red against the dewy green background.
"God, no," she whispered, as it played again. She couldn't figure out if it was happening- or happened.. or.. damnit, he was just toying with her.
Laughter, this time heard, and the vision fades. "God," she breathed, as her hearing returned to normal, and she realized her drama was now rolling credits. She closed her eyes, allowing herself to relax. "It didn't happen.. It didn't happen.." it didn't mean anything..
But she couldn't be sure.
